Higher/Int 2 History of Art / SQA exemplar pages

S5/6 PRELIMS/ N5 Prelims
Prelim dates for both Higher and N5 pupils are on: 
THURSDAY 29TH JANUARY 2015
HIGHER - 9.40-11.10am (exam venue will be on your exam timetable)
N5 - 8.50-9.25am (exam venue will be on your exam timetable)
Remember to revise all your notes and essay materials for the SQA Exam. 
Use the S5/6 pages / S4- N5 Pages on this website to look at SQA past papers and sample questions, as well as exemplars of how to study/ answer a Higher/ N5 question in the exam.Candidates should carefully ready the instructions and the questions in exam and answer the KEY points which are asked for in the answers. 
Higher - part B questions (history of Art and Design are worth 20 marks) - it is a good idea to answer these questions first - as they are worth most marks, then answer the 10 mark Critical picture questions. Try to allow 25mins per history question and no more than 20 minutes for each critical question.
N5 - All questions are worth 10 marks - you will only sit half the exam at Prelim, as you have only covered design at this stage - exam later in session will be 1 hour 10 mins.


***Higher/ Int2 - NAB TEST - Miss Ross's  Higher/ Int2  Class***
Will be on ......................(date to be announced)  November. The NAB will be like a Mock Prelim, with same amount of time/ same type of questions etc. Advice for NAB test was issued in class on 2oth November. Results in our NAB test are a good indicator of a pass/fail in the Prelim. All NAB results will be given to Parents at S5/6 parent evening on 4/12/13.

A good pass in this component of the Exam can make a big difference to your overall grade at Higher or Int2 as these 60 marks (H) and 40 Marks (Int2) are almost a quarter of your final grade!

Q3. Still Life 'H' 2010 - Sample Answer - SQA

(a) The question requires the candidate to make an analysis of the composition, eg the carefully balanced forms and the use of perspective.  Comment should be made about the artist’s handling of media, colour and tone with reference to this work being a traditional approach to a modern subject matter.  Candidates should also note the artist’s use of a full tonal range and the use of warm and cool colours.  Justified personal opinion should be rewarded.   



Q3. Still Life 'Int2' - Sample Answer - SQA

(a) In this question the candidate will be expected to justify opinions made on this artist’s choice of subject matter.  They may then give as broad or as selective a set of comments 
that cover the visual elements that they see at work in this painting.  Marks should be awarded to those that are justified in some manner.  Here candidates may refer to the 
visual elements they see as the strongest in the work, the portrayal of surfaces and textures or the use of colour and tone to suggest realism in forms in the work.   
The simple arrangement and the slick handling of technique may also be mentioned and these should be well rewarded.

Q11. Jewellery Design 'H' 2010 - Sample Answer SQA
  
(a) In discussing the designer’s sources of inspiration and use of materials in creating this pendant, answers should refer to the strong influence of machinery and the resulting 
 mechanical or industrial aesthetics of the neck piece.  Candidates should comment on the designer’s working methods recognising that the pendant has been assembled using found objects.  In discussing the practicality of the pendant candidates should note the size of the piece and deduce that this, combined with the weight of the materials used, would strongly affect the wearability of the pendant.   

Q11. Jewellery Design 'Int2' - Sample Answer - SQA

(a) Candidates should discuss how found materials have been used to create this statement piece of jewellery.  Candidates are also instructed to give their opinion on whether it is a 
 successful design in terms of style and wearability.   
Found materials: The choice and likely source of the materials could be discussed, along with comments on how they have been combined and put together.   
Style: The style of the piece should provoke opinion.  Candidates should attempt to describe the style and say whether they regard it as successful.  The style of the piece may be liked or disliked and well justified points made in this respect should be rewarded.  
Good responses will relate the issue of style to the fact that it is intended as a statement piece.   
Wearability: Candidates should give their opinions on the wearability of the piece. Reference should be made to the large scale and the fact that it is likely to be very heavy.  
Candidates may also discuss other practical considerations, such as the inflexibility of the neckpiece and whether it is likely to be comfortable.  Opinion may also be given on 
health and safety issues relating to wearablility.  Candidates may relate the impracticality of the jewellery to its function as a statement piece. Candidates should be given credit for relevant, well reasoned points made.
