What are Production Skills?

Production Skills refers to the various design areas in drama such as Set, Lighting, Sound, Props, Costume and Make-up & Hair.  From S4 onwards, pupils are given the opportunity to specialise in these areas for their practical exam.

National 5
Candidates can either choose Acting or Design.
If the choose Design then they choose ONE from:

• Set
• Props
• Lighting
• Sound
• Costume
• Make-up & Hair

Higher
Candidates can either choose Acting, Directing or Design
If they choose Design they must explore set plus one other from:

• Props
• Lighting
• Sound
• Costume
• Make-up & Hair

Advanced Higher
Candidates can either choose Acting, Directing or Design.
​If they choose design they must explore set plus two other areas from:

• Props
• Lighting
• Sound
• Costume
• Make-up & Hair
• Media (only available at AH)

Design Concept Terminology

At all qualification levels, all drama pupils must display a solid understanding of the various production areas and the terminology relating to design concepts.
